Blackboard Wedding Cake

Last weekend one of my oldest friends got married. I was really honoured that they asked me to make the cake for their special day.

They fancied something different and the original plan was to go for a topsy turvey style cake, this was worrying me a bit because I had never done anything like that before. On our final meet up for wedding cake chat, it was all sorted, we knew exactly what we were doing down to the ribbon on the cake. As I was about to leave they were telling me about all their decorations and how they had lots of blackboard and hessian going on. I then asked "Have you seen the chalkboard style wedding cakes that are quite in style at the moment?" Turns out they hadn't.

A few photos sent across that evening and our theme had completely changed, they both loved the idea. With less than a week to go we did a mock up of the chalk effect design to see what it looked like and it was gorgeous. It was so lovely to see their reaction to their cake, we took it down to set up the day before. The road to the venue was quite a scary drive so taking it the day before meant we could all relax knowing it was there safely. The wedding was at the Oxwich Bay Hotel in the Gower, such a gorgeous venue, it was a beautiful wedding and we were lucky enough to be there as guests.

Back to the cake, three tiers in three different flavours. Bottom tier was vanilla with vanilla buttercream and strawberry conserve. Middle tier was carrot cake with lemon buttercream covered in white chocolate ganache, and the top tier was lemon cake with lemon buttercream.

Yana and Joe wanted figures of them and the children on the cake, I don't make figures so they were made by Sugar Mouse in Carmarthen.

It's so lovely to see people find their happy ever after.

In 2015 I made it through to the last 50 in the last audition of The Great British Bake Off. Sadly I wasn't chosen for the programme but I need to carry on my journey as I can't imagine my life without baking.

I'd love to start writing my own recipes. So what better place to do it than starting a blog.
